A Whole Lot of Hanky-Panky Going On

The massive number of individuals feeling social deprivation, the ease of technological communication and the criminal expertise of savvy fraudsters all set the global stage for a whole lot of hanky-panky. The particular details of romance confidence schemes evolve every year and have little to nothing to do with true romance.

Dorothy Riggs’ Story on Romance Scams Featured in Fraud Magazine
Categories: Latest News Published On: 6/2/2016 8:55 AM

"A Whole Lot of Hanky-Panky Going On" is the title of a recent work by Synovus Regional Fraud Investigator Dorothy Riggs. It's not a detective mystery or a romance novel; it's an article in the May edition of Fraud Magazine, the official magazine of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE).

Dorothy writes about how the growing population of single adults is a juicy target for "romance confidence schemes," which are anything but romantic. Every parent or friend of an adult single person should read this informative story.

Here's to Dorothy for being a recognized expert in fraud awareness and prevention, both at Synovus and among her peers in the ACFE.

Dorothy,

I just read your article.  First, let me say congratulations!!!!

It was a great read and very informative.  I’ve printed copies of this because I’ve had a few customers who fell prey to some of these situations.  Material like this can help so many people these days.  I try to tell them, if they sound too good to be true, something is very wrong.

Again, congratulations.

Dorothy,

Congrats on being published! That was a great article featured on Insite. We see so much of what you discuss particularly involving wires to other countries and the elderly.

Thanks for taking the time to put it together.

I just wanted to say I really enjoyed the article you wrote on the sweetheart/confidence scams. There’s a lot of great info there about how to stay smart and avoid falling victim that I’ll certainly share with my family and friends. Sadly, my brother who is handicap was conned by a romance scam last year. He met a model-like gorgeous woman in the mall, they hit it off real well, and they both quickly “fell” for each other. For over a month, still never physically seeing him other than the brief time in the mall, she conjured up all kinds of reasons for him to send her money, all the while showering him with promises of lavish living and vacations once the modeling gig got started and she was living in in his city permanently. In the interim he had sent her a total of around $4,000 when she disappeared, and he was heartbroken. Unfortunately he kept this whole thing secret. Had I or any of my other siblings known, we would have seen the warning signs.

One thing’s for sure, those con artists sure are smart and know all the right things to say and do. Hopefully with articles like yours, more people will wise up and promulgate the word with loved ones so the crooks aren’t always getting so lucky. Thanks again for the great read!
